Highlighting San Francisco’s talented musicians is an important aspect of the community at Mission Community Market. That’s why MCM is excited to unveil an all-new street stage TODAY! The stage will serve as an important platform for our accomplished musicians to engage with the market and highlight their music. Get your first look at the stage below, then come see it in action tonight as local rockstars Diana Gameros and FriendsLa Gente Trio, and The Paper Dolls bring it to life!

Street Stage4

Our street stage is a new, one-of-a-kind design created by SF’s street stage team, John Francis and Ross Hansen, and was built in collaboration with San Francisco’s Pavement to Parks program. The new stage will carve out a space within MCM for local musicians to call their own. We are thrilled that the platform will allow for increased movement and visibility for performers at MCM. Like the prototype street stage that we debuted last year, we know that this new stage will be met with exuberance from our community of musicians, vendors, and shoppers.

Diana GamerosCelebrate the debut of this new stage with MCM on Thursday, as we kick off the summer with three fantastic musical acts. First, listen to Diana Gameros and Friends at 4pm. Diana Gameros is an innovative and versatile musician who writes bilingual songs of “love, longing, and hope.” Her music is firmly placed in the cultural crossroads between Mexico and the independent music scene of California. If you like what you hear, check out her upcoming gig on June 14th at the SFJAZZ center, and listen to her recent debut album, Eterno Retorno.

La Gente - Rafael SarriaTaking the stage at 5pm is a trio from the Bay Area’s beloved band, La Gente! Come listen and boogie to a high-powered musical blend of Reggae, Cumbia, Hip-Hop, Salsa, Rock, and World Music. Led by singer-songwriter Rafael Bustamarte Sarria, who is also an organizer of The Mission Arts Performance Project, the group has been heralded for transcending genres. La Gente is currently in production for their fourth studio album, and their set is sure to make everyone dance. If you just can’t get enough of La Gente, check out their all-ages Carnaval show this Saturday at The Chapel!

The Paper DollsLastly, don’t miss The Paper Dolls at 6:30 pm. Playing a mixture of old and new, covers and originals, The Paper Dolls are a San Francisco Classic. The talented duo behind the band, Uni and Em Doll, bring crooning vocals, ukeleles, and glitz. Want even more Paper Dolls? Check out their upcoming shows here.

The unique design of this stage is flexible and bright––optimal for the continuously moving atmosphere of the market!  Come and help us ring in the summer with fresh produce, tasty dinner, and great music from local artists Thursday May 22nd, 4pm-8pm, at Mission Community Market!

Where do you live? I live in the East Bay, but I work at the Mission branch of the Library which is nearby.

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week.

What are you buying?  Strawberries from Yerena Farms and shiitake mushrooms from Far West Fungi.

What’s your favorite part of the market? It’s wonderful that it’s here…. and a great addition to this neighborhood.  I love seeing all the kids, music, and dancing.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  People should know that it’s here and that it’s a lovely place to meet your neighbors.

Five Ways to Beat the Heat at MCM

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Blog, Chaac Mool, Get Goes Mobile Cafe, Live Music, Shrimp & Love, Twin Girls Farm | Leave a comment

The weather forecast for this Thursday is calling for temperatures in the 80s, something that rarely happens in San Francisco! We’re so excited for this week’s market to feel like a hot summer’s day that we’ve made a list of the five best ways that you can chill out, MCM style.

1. Peaches & Pomegranate Juice – We couldn’t possibly create a summertime feel without the most quintessential summer fruit – peaches! Take a stroll by Twin Girls Farm this week to taste the season’s first sweet, organic delights. While you’re there, grab a refreshing bottle of their 100% pomegranate juice – no water or sugar added, just pure, delicious juice.

2. Jasmine Tea Milkshake from Get Goes Mobile Cafe – That red coffee-mobile carries more than just wonderful espresso, pour-overs, and hot chocolate. They also have delightfully tasty milkshakes that will cool you off and transport your taste buds to a malt shop in the ’50s! Choose from mocha or espresso (both available in decaf or regular) and their newest delicious flavor, Jasmine Tea!

3. Shrimp & Love Ceviche – All of their ceviche varieties are refreshing and light – perfect for a hot day! We recommend the Green Aguachile Shrimp Ceviche – delicious shrimp marinated in lime and lemon juices with cucumber, red onion, and spices. Contrary to what your intuition might tell you, eating spicy food is actually a great way to cool your body down! Take some home for dinner this Thursday, or grab some chips and enjoy it right at the market!

4. Agua Fresca from Chaac-Mool – This week Chaac Mool will have three freshly-made, thirst-quenching flavors of agua fresca to choose from: Sandia (watermelon), Fresa (strawberry), and Jamaica (hibiscus). A glass of agua fresca pairs perfectly with a gordita or a couple of tacos and will keep you feeling cool while you cruise around the market.

5. Live Music – Nothing will chill you out quite like the musical stylings of Ben Brown and Jascha! It doesn’t get much cooler than blues, and Benjamin Brown is just about the most talented blues man we know. Benjamin will play 4 pm – 6 pm. Then Jascha will take to the stage to lull us into a mellow, euphoric state with his “catchy and cerebral” indie pop tunes.  Jascha will play 6 pm – 8 pm. Catch them at MCM this Thursday!

Justin Ancheta & the 23rd Street Kickers

Music at MCM

Join us this Thursday as we welcome two great musical acts to Bartlett Street. At 4pm we’ll hear great tunes from Justin Ancheta, and at 6pm the 23rd Street Kickers jazz collective will take to the stage.

Justin Ancheta is a guitarist, vocalist, and composer who hails from San Francisco. Ancheta has toured in both Europe and the United States by bike and by train. His lyrics share the human power of community–who better to perform at MCM?! Ancheta’s eclectic style of reggae flavored funk and jazz is infectious. His newest CD, ‘Plant’ is set to be released in April 2013.

The 23rd Street Kickers are a jazz collective made up of several talented Bay Area locals who love to entertain and improvise. The last time they played at MCM their infectious, cool, jazzy tunes it made for a great night! Come out this Thursday as they do it again, 6-8pm.

Ben Brown & Cello Joe at MCM

Join us this Thursday 2/28 as we say goodbye to February and hello to two of our favorite local musicians: Benjamin Brown and CelloJoe. These two guys are no strangers to Bartlett Street, and their talents never fail to amaze.

Ben Brown

First up at 4pm will be Benjamin Brown, a self-taught blues singer and songwriter living in Oakland, CA. At age 25, he is a self-taught blues guitarist who plays with as much soul as any contemporary blues artist.

At 6pm, we’ll enjoy music from the talented CelloJoe. Utilizing only his voice, a cello and a loop pedal, he is able to take listeners on a sonic musical journey. CelloJoe is able to record live on the spot with a looper and produce intricate tapestries of harmony, melody, and rhythm, and mimics everything from dubstep to folk to rock to classical to hip hop by beatboxing, throatsinging, singing, plucking and bowing the cello.

Come on down to MCM this Thursday for a grand ol’ time! MCM is every Thursday at 22nd/Bartlett, 4-8pm.
