Mercado Kitchen: Never hard-boil eggs again!

Hard-boiled eggs are a wonderful, pre-packaged, protein-packed snack! They also serve as great breakfast accompaniments to granola or cereal that alone just won’t keep you going until lunchtime. But after several recent unsuccessful batches of hard-boiled eggs resulting me destroying most of the egg trying to peel them (Did I use too much water? Boil them too long? Not soak them in the ice bath long enough?), I had just about given up.

Jablow’s aims to offer the perfect marriage of East Coast deli meat culture and the West Coast commitment to organic practices and sustainability. Dan Jablow founded the company in 2009, with the desire to bring high-quality meats to the Bay Area, without shortcuts during the brining, curing, or ‘low and slow‘ smoking process.  You can learn more about Dan Jablow’s ‘meat awakening’ here. In addition to tasting amazing, their smoked meats are organic, pasture-raised, and hormone and antibiotic-free!  Jablow’s Meats was recently a Top 10 Finalist in the World Food Championship’s Sandwich Competition. They smoked their meat on the spot and served up a delicious hot pastrami sandwich, with glowing reviews. You can find their pastrami, bacon, pork loin, ham, and smoked ham hocks when you visit their stall at the Mission Community Market. We are pleased to highlight Terra Savia, one of our newest vendors at the market.  Terra Savia is located in Hopland, CA, in the hills of Mendocino and Sonoma Counties. Currently, they are bringing their incredible extra virgin olive oil to MCM, as well as some olive oil-based beauty products, including soap, moisturizing cream, and hand salve (of which MCM’s Market Manager Emily is a huge fan!)  Soon, they will be selling their wine at the market, so look out for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, and more.

Owner Jim Milone is a fourth generation Hopland winegrower, with over 30 years of experience on the land.  His great-grandfather emigrated from Italy as a young man and operated the area’s first winery until the Prohibition Era, and the family has been there ever since.  In addition to Terra Savia’s commitment to organic, sustainable practices to create their wine, olive oil and honey, they are also focused on stewardship of their land.  For every acre of orchard that is planted for production, 1oo acres of open land is protected.  As a result, the property is home to over 100o species of plants and animals.  When you buy products from Terra Savia, your money is supporting both the local economy, as well as conservation and wildlife protection!

Come on down to MCM this week to taste some of their delicious olive oil varieties!
