The Mission Community Market’s mission is to improve the health, economic opportunity and safety of Mission families through a weekly market and a beautiful public space. Murals, like Jet Martinez‘s Amate Mission, that tell the story of the Mission District and its people are the first piece of achieving that mission.
MCM supports artists, street art, and opportunity for new artists in all its forms. But the desecration of others’ work doesn’t help the Mission, the Mission’s community of artists or the Mission’s history – a history that is told through the Amate Mission mural and through the Mission Dolores Mural on this block. For these reasons, we were saddened by the recent tag of Jet’s mural – not even 2 months old. But thanks to Jet’s generosity and speediness, the mural tag was cleaned up as quickly as possible.
MCM is creating a mural gallery on the entire block of Bartlett, between 21st and 22nd Streets. In parallel, we are working with the City of San Francisco, property owners and neighbors to create an outdoor market plaza for the Mission! Funds are being sought for safer lighting, green designs, and permanent market infrastructure on Bartlett! If you’d like to support murals, safer streets and public space in the Mission, please consider volunteering here or making a tax-deductible donation here.
Either way, stay in touch! Every Thursday from 4-8 you can be a vendor, join the market, or come out and talk with a neighbor. We are always there to hear your ideas and concerns. And rest assured that the other 6 days a week MCM is hard at work making this street in the Mission more beautiful, safe, and welcoming to all.
Thank you to all the volunteers for making this market happen and all of the Bartlett neighbors for their support.
