Right in time for Mother’s Day, our new vendor Medrano Farms offers a variety of fantastic flowers that are perfect for Mom!

medranoIn addition to their amazing King Proteas, Irises, Gerber Daisies, Ranunculus, Roses, and other fine flora, they are planning to bring special Mother’s Day bouquets this Thursday (May 9th) that you can purchase for $5-10!  The Medrano family has been running their farm out of Monterrey County for the last twelve years. The family started out doing wholesale, and now sell at a few markets in San Francisco. We feel very lucky that they will now be coming out to MCM every week. When asked what he wanted to share with our blog’s readers, David Medrano’s response was simple: “Come and enjoy the beautiful flowers!” Show your love for Mom, and support a local farmer!

If you’re looking for a gift for Mom, we have plenty of awesome presents available this week to show mom you love her while buying locally!

Pick a peck of pickled goodies with a gift box from Jarred SF Brine! You can mix and match three 9-oz jars of pickles for $24.

If Mom deserves a little pampering, pick up some all-natural vegan body care goodies from En Vie Naturals, including soaps, scrubs, and lotions.

Animal Instincts Apparel will make their monthly appearance at MCM this week (2nd Thursdays)! Their line of screen printed tees, onesies, and sweatshirts feature adorable animal designs created by owner Jamai Lowell. These awesome designs are whimsical and unique, and they come in adult sizes for Moms and onesies for babies!

Artist Jen Kindell has beautiful tea towels and canvas bags, all screen printed with her designs featuring seasonal produce. Her newest creation is a limited-edition blood orange tea towel ($12 each, pictured). Her tote bags are $15.

We are so excited to welcome Boffo Cart to the MCM family! Ever since they started serving dinner at the market a couple of weeks ago, customers have been raving about their food. Boffo Cart offers its own version of seasonal, California-style Italian fare, using organic, local ingredients from a variety of market vendors from around the Bay. For his calzones, Chef Rhasaan Fernandez makes his own completely vegan dough (which is insanely delicious!), with flour milled every day in San Francisco, and he serves his sandwiches on Acme bread. People of MCM: Carlos

Meet Carlos, a regular customer who loves that he can pick up dinner and shop for groceries, right near his house!

Carlos

Where do you live?  Up the street, Valencia and 21st.

How often do you come to the MCM?  About every week.

What are you buying?  Bok choy, collards, and cilantro from Nyia Yi Farms, green leaf lettuce from Blue House, and a chicken from Roli Roti.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  I like having a farmers’ market close to where I live, just down the block.  I’m also glad that the market takes place at night, which is a better fit for my schedule. I like other farmers’ markets but I can’t always go to them.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  People should know that there are produce vendors and also food vendors…they can buy food that’s ready to eat.

Five Ways to Beat the Heat at MCM

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Blog, Chaac Mool, Get Goes Mobile Cafe, Live Music, Shrimp & Love, Twin Girls Farm | Leave a comment

The weather forecast for this Thursday is calling for temperatures in the 80s, something that rarely happens in San Francisco! We’re so excited for this week’s market to feel like a hot summer’s day that we’ve made a list of the five best ways that you can chill out, MCM style.

1. Peaches & Pomegranate Juice – We couldn’t possibly create a summertime feel without the most quintessential summer fruit – peaches! Take a stroll by Twin Girls Farm this week to taste the season’s first sweet, organic delights. While you’re there, grab a refreshing bottle of their 100% pomegranate juice – no water or sugar added, just pure, delicious juice.

2. Jasmine Tea Milkshake from Get Goes Mobile Cafe – That red coffee-mobile carries more than just wonderful espresso, pour-overs, and hot chocolate. They also have delightfully tasty milkshakes that will cool you off and transport your taste buds to a malt shop in the ’50s! Choose from mocha or espresso (both available in decaf or regular) and their newest delicious flavor, Jasmine Tea!

3. Shrimp & Love Ceviche – All of their ceviche varieties are refreshing and light – perfect for a hot day! We recommend the Green Aguachile Shrimp Ceviche – delicious shrimp marinated in lime and lemon juices with cucumber, red onion, and spices. Contrary to what your intuition might tell you, eating spicy food is actually a great way to cool your body down! Take some home for dinner this Thursday, or grab some chips and enjoy it right at the market!

4. Agua Fresca from Chaac-Mool – This week Chaac Mool will have three freshly-made, thirst-quenching flavors of agua fresca to choose from: Sandia (watermelon), Fresa (strawberry), and Jamaica (hibiscus). A glass of agua fresca pairs perfectly with a gordita or a couple of tacos and will keep you feeling cool while you cruise around the market.

5. Live Music – Nothing will chill you out quite like the musical stylings of Ben Brown and Jascha! It doesn’t get much cooler than blues, and Benjamin Brown is just about the most talented blues man we know. Benjamin will play 4 pm – 6 pm. Then Jascha will take to the stage to lull us into a mellow, euphoric state with his “catchy and cerebral” indie pop tunes.  Jascha will play 6 pm – 8 pm. Catch them at MCM this Thursday!

Asparagus & Farro

We all know that asparagus is the best, and often, I simply roast it in the oven with salt & pepper, olive oil, and a splash of lemon, and love life.  But, what about when you want something a little more?  I cooked up this easy Asparagus-Farro Salad with Feta, using the incredible asparagus that MCM is lucky enough to have from Zuckerman’s Farm.  For this recipe you’ll need:

  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • 2 cups of dry farro
  • 1 bunch red spring onions (from Tomatero Farm)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (from Nyia Yi Farms)
  • 2 – 3oz feta cheese
  • Olive Oil (from Terra Savia)
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Salt & Pepper to taste Read more
