Where do you live?  Liberty & Guerrero

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week, pretty much.

What are you buying?  Peaches from Twin Girls, a special order from Bok Ssam (in a bowl) so that Zoe can eat it.  I love all the samples that the vendors give out, so that Zoe can try new things. Often, we get salmon from Coastside Farms or cakes from flourChylde. And, we LOVE getting the kettle corn from Peter’s Kettle Corn!

What’s your favorite part of the market? We like the music, and also the cooking demos at the Urban Sprouts booth.  I really like the guy who does them*; he’s always so engaging.  It’s also nice to see people from the neighborhood.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about? There are more food vendors than before; the market has really grown. Also, it’s a great place to have dinner, that’s why you see so many parents here.

* Editor’s note: That’s Raul Hernandez with Urban Sprouts! Yay Raul!

Mercado Kitchen: Miso-Tahini Dressing

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Blog, Mercado Kitchen, Nyia Yi Farm, Recipes, Tomatero Farm, Vendors | Leave a comment

I developed this Miso-Tahini dressing a couple of months ago and it’s the gift that keeps on giving.  It’s so simple, everyone is nuts about it, and it goes well with everything!  I have dressed green salads with it, poured it on cooked legumes with rice….the applications are ENDLESS!  I make it in a small mason jar, keep it in the fridge, and break into it all the time. Here, I’m making it for a dino kale salad with watermelon radishes!  If you haven’t had watermelon radishes before, they can be mild or spicy, depending on the time of year.  Not only are they tasty, these radishes add stunning color to any dish!

 You’ll need

  • 1 bunch dino kale, chiffonaded from Tomatero Farm
  • 3-4 watermelon radishes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbs tahini
  • 1 tbs miso
  • 1 tbs sesame oil
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 big clove garlic, minced from Nyia Yi Farms
  • ¼ of a lemon
  • Pepper to taste Read more

Mercado Kitchen: Never hard-boil eggs again!

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Great Valley Poultry, Recipes | Leave a comment

Hard-boiled eggs are a wonderful, pre-packaged, protein-packed snack! They also serve as great breakfast accompaniments to granola or cereal that alone just won’t keep you going until lunchtime. But after several recent unsuccessful batches of hard-boiled eggs resulting me destroying most of the egg trying to peel them (Did I use too much water? Boil them too long? Not soak them in the ice bath long enough?), I had just about given up.

Trust us–once you steam your eggs you will never go back! And now that MCM vendor Great Valley Poultry offers organic, cage-free, farm-fresh eggs for jut $4.50 a dozen every Thursday, you’d be silly to pass up the chance to try this simple trick!

Where do you live?  21st and Shotwell

How often do you come to the MCM?  This is my third time!

What are you buying?  I bought dinner for us– pulled pork from 4505 Meats, a Korean Fried Chicken & Waffle Sandwich from Bok Ssam, and nachos from Chaac-Mool.  I also got beets and spring onions from Blue House, nectarines from Twin Girls, raspberries from Yerena Farms, and a lamb tart from Marla Bakery.  I even have $4 left for next week!

What’s your favorite part of the market?  I like that it’s so close.  We don’t have a car, so it’s super easy and very straightforward.  Also, we just met some neighbors here, and there’s a sense of community.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about? There are not the same throngs of people here like other markets, it’s more mellow.

What’s your favorite part of the market? It’s wonderful that it’s here…. and a great addition to this neighborhood.  I love seeing all the kids, music, and dancing.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  People should know that it’s here and that it’s a lovely place to meet your neighbors.
