shalini

Meet Shalini & Misha (left) and Jen & Ada (right), who live three doors down from each other, and just a couple blocks away from MCM! Fun Fact: They became good friends after their daughters were born – on the same day!

Where do you live? In the Mission.

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week!

What are you buying?  Baked goods from Arizmendi, oranges from Twin Girls, mushrooms from Far West Fungi, veggies from Nyia Yi Farms (celery, ginger, mint & beets), and olive oil from Terra Savia.  And we’ll probably go to Roli Roti.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  Location, location, location.  I like that it’s walkable from the house.  You can bring your kid, it’s very child-friendly.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  Roli Roti is amazing.  I love that you can pick up dinner.  You can get a meal for everyone in the family, and then also shop for groceries.

Get Your Asparagus On at Zuckerman’s Farm!

If you’re wondering why the asparagus from vendor Zuckerman’s Farm tastes so good, that’s because it’s grown in black delta peat soil.  The farm is located about 80 miles away in Stockton, on an ‘island’ in the delta formed by the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers as they flow toward the Bay Area.  Peat soil gets deposited from marshes and bogs as rivers run downstream, and is composed from 90% organic material, great for growing veggies!  Roscoe Zuckerman is the third generation farmer farming this land, after his grandfather fell in love with the property in the 1920s.  Currently, Roscoe and his crew are farming around 1500 acres!  Not only do they grow several different varieties and sizes of delicious asparagus, Zuckerman’s Farm also offers many kinds of potatoes (fingerlings, purple, Yukon, red, russets).  Zuckerman’s may even be bringing some blueberries and exotic melons (grown by a neighbor) to the market later this year!  Visit them at MCM and meet Angie – she loves working for Zuckerman’s so much she came out of retirement to sell their produce at farmers’ markets!

We are so excited to be getting delicious, plump, juicy strawberries now in season from Yerena Farms at MCM.  This week, Tomatero Farms joins the mix and they’ll have berries as well!

Jablow's Meats

Jablow’s Meats is one of MCM’s new additions to the market this season! Learn a little more about them, and then come on down to MCM to taste their delicious products and maybe take some home!

Jablow’s aims to offer the perfect marriage of East Coast deli meat culture and the West Coast commitment to organic practices and sustainability. Dan Jablow founded the company in 2009, with the desire to bring high-quality meats to the Bay Area, without shortcuts during the brining, curing, or ‘low and slow‘ smoking process.  You can learn more about Dan Jablow’s ‘meat awakening’ here. In addition to tasting amazing, their smoked meats are organic, pasture-raised, and hormone and antibiotic-free!  Jablow’s Meats was recently a Top 10 Finalist in the World Food Championship’s Sandwich Competition. They smoked their meat on the spot and served up a delicious hot pastrami sandwich, with glowing reviews. You can find their pastrami, bacon, pork loin, ham, and smoked ham hocks when you visit their stall at the Mission Community Market. Come pay them a visit to learn more about what makes their meats so special!
