We are pleased to highlight Terra Savia, one of our newest vendors at the market.  Terra Savia is located in Hopland, CA, in the hills of Mendocino and Sonoma Counties. Currently, they are bringing their incredible extra virgin olive oil to MCM, as well as some olive oil-based beauty products, including soap, moisturizing cream, and hand salve (of which MCM’s Market Manager Emily is a huge fan!)  Soon, they will be selling their wine at the market, so look out for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, and more.

Owner Jim Milone is a fourth generation Hopland winegrower, with over 30 years of experience on the land.  His great-grandfather emigrated from Italy as a young man and operated the area’s first winery until the Prohibition Era, and the family has been there ever since.  In addition to Terra Savia’s commitment to organic, sustainable practices to create their wine, olive oil and honey, they are also focused on stewardship of their land.  For every acre of orchard that is planted for production, 1oo acres of open land is protected.  As a result, the property is home to over 100o species of plants and animals.  When you buy products from Terra Savia, your money is supporting both the local economy, as well as conservation and wildlife protection!

Come on down to MCM this week to taste some of their delicious olive oil varieties!

Meet Charlie of Coastside Farms!!

Charlie is the owner and founder of Coast Side Farms, a specialty smoked fish business. Charlie’s family knows fish in and out, so six years ago after 25 years of doing litigation support and touring as a jazz musician he decided to start his own business.

Charlie’s family in Alaska does all of the fishing by line and they travel up and down the west coast through British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon to catch wild salmon. Depending on the season, the salmon could be in a variety of locations. His cousin is responsible for smoking the fish. I got the pepper smoked salmon (see below), and all I can say is, it’s DELICIOUS! (check out our Mercado Kitchen recipe for a yummy breakfast taco to see Coastside Farms smoked salmon used in a recipe!)

Charlie loves the market life and says that his experience helping out at the Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market in San Diego is what made him want to sell at markets. So when you’re at the market be sure to stop by and talk with Charlie about this week’s fresh catch!

Meet Amy and Joe of Marla Bakery!!

Amy and Joe

Amy and Joe, co-owners of Marla Bakery, are an absolute delight and the goodies that come out of their kitchen are equally delightful. When telling me about how the Marla Bakery came to be, Joe explained that he fell in love with Amy’s baked goods first and then Amy. I must say both the baked goods and Joe and Amy are easy to fall in love with — I hope you try their delicious treats and meet them when you stop by the market! Read more

What’s That?!: Dried Jujubes

This week at the Market everyone should try an organic dried jujube! Used for centuries for their medicinal qualities, these sweet little fruits make a delicious snack. They taste a bit like what you’d get if you crossed a date and a marshmallow–soft and spongey with a mellow sweetness. They can be used to make tea, to sweeten desserts, or they can be enjoyed on their own (eat them like you would a date). Twin Girls Farm has had them for a couple months now and they will be selling them this Thursday at MCM! Grab a bag and tell us about what you used them for in the comments section of this post or on our Facebook page!
