Sliced Strawberries

O, glorious strawberry season!  How long have we waited for it to arrive?!  It seems like years. Well, at least one. We are so excited to be getting delicious, plump, juicy strawberries now in season from Yerena Farms at MCM.  This week, Tomatero Farms joins the mix and they’ll have berries as well!

If you have any will power at all, and you actually have some uneaten strawberries in your basket by the time you get home, make this delicious strawberry-spinach salad filled with candied walnuts and optional bacon vinaigrette!

Jablow's Meats

Jablow’s Meats is one of MCM’s new additions to the market this season! Learn a little more about them, and then come on down to MCM to taste their delicious products and maybe take some home!

Jablow’s aims to offer the perfect marriage of East Coast deli meat culture and the West Coast commitment to organic practices and sustainability. Dan Jablow founded the company in 2009, with the desire to bring high-quality meats to the Bay Area, without shortcuts during the brining, curing, or ‘low and slow‘ smoking process.  You can learn more about Dan Jablow’s ‘meat awakening’ here. In addition to tasting amazing, their smoked meats are organic, pasture-raised, and hormone and antibiotic-free!  Jablow’s Meats was recently a Top 10 Finalist in the World Food Championship’s Sandwich Competition. They smoked their meat on the spot and served up a delicious hot pastrami sandwich, with glowing reviews. You can find their pastrami, bacon, pork loin, ham, and smoked ham hocks when you visit their stall at the Mission Community Market. Come pay them a visit to learn more about what makes their meats so special!

This week there were so many great folks at MCM, we decided to feature two! Meet two of our market patrons, Shirley and David.

Shirley

Meet Shirley, who we wanted to feature because she is one of our most dedicated MCM customers!  She’s always at the market, dressed to the nines and looking fabulous.  AND every week, she leaves with her cart filled to the brim….

Where do you live?  23rd between Guerrero and San Jose

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week!  One week I couldn’t come because I had people visiting.

What are you buying?  Asparagus from Zuckerman’s Farm, smoked fish from Coastside Farms, chicken from Roli Roti, mushrooms from Far West Fungi, a ham hock from Jablow’s Meats for my son, eggs from Great Valley Poultry, and cauliflower, greens, and broccoli from Blue House Farm.  I’m making broccoli and cauliflower soup tonight.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  It’s close and convenient, and it has most of the organic farmers that I’ve known for years.  For the last twenty-five years, I’ve eaten organic.

What’s the best-kept secret at the MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  No secrets!  We don’t want any, we want everyone to come!

person of week

Meet David, who was kind enough to let us interview him before he ate his burger — what amazing willpower!

Where do you live?  22nd and Shotwell

How often do you come to the MCM?  This is my second time. I’m glad you’re back.  I’m glad it’s here.

What are you buying?  A burger from 4505 Meats.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  I like the different variety of pop up food stands, with food you wouldn’t necessarily get in the Mission.  You might have to travel to another neighborhood to get this variety.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  Good quality and fresh products that are here every week.
