4505 Meats

The Last Market was Unforgettable!

If you weren’t able to make it out to the Mission Mercado last night, there’s some bad news and good news.  The bad news is, you missed one of the best markets so far this season! The good news is, you can find us at 22nd and Bartlett every Thursday from 4 pm til 8pm, so you’ll get another chance next week to join in on the fun.

The weather set the tone for the market, with plenty of midday sunshine reminding us that yes, summer is actually here! And just in case you weren’t sure about that, the bounty of colorful tomatoes from Happy Boy Farms made that fact undeniably clear!  It was the perfect kind of day to enjoy a watermelon-mint popsicle from Pop Nation!

Those who had pre-ordered a Chef’s Market Box featuring the 4505 Meats burger and a fennel-nectarine side salad were not disappointed! We had a great team of MCM volunteers and some awesome folks from Good Eggs prepping the boxes for delivery and pickup and everything went off without a hitch. If you missed your chance to get a piece of the market box action, don’t worry!  There will be a new market box on offer the week after next, so keep an eye out for what delicious meal curated by a local chef you’ll be cooking next.

As always, MCM was thrilled to feature some very talented local musicians. First up was Steffy Sue, who entertained MCM patrons with some delightful, toe-tappin’ tunes on the ukulele! She was followed by La Orquestra 24, who were so loved by the crowd of eager salsa dancers and fans that they couldn’t stop playing until well after 8pm!

Not to be outdone by the musicians, the amazing Dilsa Lugo, La Cocina graduate and owner of catering company Los Cilantros offered an informative cooking demo at the market this week, passing her traditional Mexican cuisine expertise on to the masses.

Last night’s market reminded us all that 22nd and Bartlett is the place to be on Thursday evenings!  We hope you love the small, intimate feel of the market and getting to know each small business owner on a personal level. Over the next few weeks come back for amazing summer figs, crazy tomatoes and a surprise new treat for dinner…

See you next Thursday!

Hello friends,

Marion Anthonisen from Bold Italic came to our Opening Day this past week. Check out what she had to say. See you this Thursday!

Recognize this stretch of Bartlett? It’s between 21st and 22nd, right by the old Giant Value. Maybe you’ve seen the awesome mural featuring two enormous, majestic seals. The rest of the block’s a little run-down, but lately it’s been perking up, thanks to the Mission Community Market, which just kicked off a new season yesterday.

Littlecity3

Executive Director Jeremy Shaw, the city planning department, the Neighborhood Parks Council, businesses like La Cocina, 18 Reasons, and oodles of other collaborators have big plans for this space, and from the looks of the market’s opening day, they’re right on track.

Littlecityfull

It’s currently the only market where you’ll be able to buy goods from Little City Gardens, a one-acre farm in SF (yep, a whole acre of farmland within the city limits!). These awesome ladies are making waves in the world of urban food production, they created the city’s very first CSA program, and they’ve got an impressive 25-part salad mix for you to try.

Edible flowers! Note the salad mix testimonials under the basket. One of my favorites: “Like a little garden in your bowl.”

Oranges

Hey, more delicious food from an awesome local producer. I was into the pomelos.

Chichuron-wind

4505 chicharrones blowin’ in the wind. We missed the worst of last night’s storm, but the vendor tents still got some pretty healthy gusts of air. Jeremy reminded me this won’t be a concern when the stalls are made permanent (told you they had big plans for this market).

Dandelion-nibs

Sampled some nutty, delicious cocoa nibs straight from the bean, courtesy of Dandelion Chocolate, who will be opening a storefront on Valencia in a few months.

Sebastapol

Jewelry and a really cute baby from Sebastopol.

Ceramics

Handmade ceramics from Smokin’ Pottery.

Bubbles

And bubbles! Toys and games (don’t miss the stack of hula hoops back there) were courtesy of Urban Sprouts, who’ll be doing healthy cooking demos at future markets. Bilingual nutrition education and healthy food incentives play a big part in the grand MCM plan. And there’s live music, too.

This market is gonna blow up. Check it out this season on Thursdays from 4-8 p.m.
