This week there were so many great folks at MCM, we decided to feature two! Meet two of our market patrons, Shirley and David.

Shirley

Meet Shirley, who we wanted to feature because she is one of our most dedicated MCM customers!  She’s always at the market, dressed to the nines and looking fabulous.  AND every week, she leaves with her cart filled to the brim….

Where do you live?  23rd between Guerrero and San Jose

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week!  One week I couldn’t come because I had people visiting.

What are you buying?  Asparagus from Zuckerman’s Farm, smoked fish from Coastside Farms, chicken from Roli Roti, mushrooms from Far West Fungi, a ham hock from Jablow’s Meats for my son, eggs from Great Valley Poultry, and cauliflower, greens, and broccoli from Blue House Farm.  I’m making broccoli and cauliflower soup tonight.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  It’s close and convenient, and it has most of the organic farmers that I’ve known for years.  For the last twenty-five years, I’ve eaten organic.

What’s the best-kept secret at the MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  No secrets!  We don’t want any, we want everyone to come!

person of week

Meet David, who was kind enough to let us interview him before he ate his burger — what amazing willpower!

Where do you live?  22nd and Shotwell

How often do you come to the MCM?  This is my second time. I’m glad you’re back.  I’m glad it’s here.

What are you buying?  A burger from 4505 Meats.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  I like the different variety of pop up food stands, with food you wouldn’t necessarily get in the Mission.  You might have to travel to another neighborhood to get this variety.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about?  Good quality and fresh products that are here every week.

Blue House Cauliflower

I made these delicious cauliflower fritters with a cumin yogurt sauce for a holiday party last year, and they were gone within minutes.  With such beautiful cauliflower available at Blue House Farm, I knew that I had to share this recipe with you.  A big thank you to Deb at Smitten Kitchen for creating such an amazing recipe that I’ve modified slightly for this post. This Thursday March 14th we have an amazing market planned for you! Not only are we welcoming some new vendors, we’re also welcoming back some of your favorite returning vendors who are just getting started this season!

Our newest vendor is Zuckerman’s Farm, selling several varieties of potatoes from fingerlings to yukon golds, as well as small and large varieties of asparagus. These potatoes will be the perfect addition to your corned beef and cabbage this St. Patty’s Day!

onigilly

After much anticipation, we’re thrilled to announce that Onigilly will make their return to MCM this Thursday! They’ll be back on a bi-weekly schedule so you can catch them at MCM on the 14th and the 28th this month. We’re so glad that we’ll have their tasty Japanese rice wraps back on Bartlett Street! Not to be outdone, Shrimp and Love Ceviche will also be back with their signature styles of ceviche, ranging from spicy to subtly sweet and everything in between! Our pals at 4505 Meats will have St. Patty’s Day specials and they’ll be smoking meats on site!

In case all that doesn’t entice you, we’ve also got music from Heather Normandale at 4:30 pm and Mountain Dojo with Toshio Hirano and Dave Berry at 6:00 pm. Heather plays eclectic folk music that combines cello, marimba, bells and trumpet, along with rhythm-driven picking on banjo, steel mandolin, and guitar.

Mountain Dojo is a bluegrass duo known to entertain with their energetic and soulful shows. They incorporate a mix of classic country and bluesy songs from the golden era of 1920-1949 featuring guitar, mandolin, and vocal harmonies.

Come on down this Thursday 4-8pm for an awesome night!

We’re excited to bring a new feature to our blog this week! MCM staff will be highlighting a person of MCM every week–it might be a shopper at the market, a volunteer, or even a vendor! We want our whole community to know about the awesome people that make MCM what it is. Who knows–we might snag you while you’re shopping and make you famous on our blog!

People of the week!

This week, meet Amberle, and Luke (who visited Amberle, and us, all the way from the Marina!)

Where do you live? 23rd and Valencia

How often do you come to the MCM?  I just moved to the neighborhood, so I’m trying to come to the market as much as possible.  I want to get all my produce here because I’m not able to go to other farmer’s markets.

What are you buying?  I’ve got this pommelo from Twin Girls Farm (pictured), and I’ll get some veggies at Blue House Farm, and then stop by 4505 Meats to see what’s good today.

What’s your favorite part of the market?  Eating Peter’s Kettle Corn!

What’s the best kept secret at MCM?  The market itself!
