Knife Sharpening at MCM Last Thursday of the Month

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Bernal Cutlery, Blog, Vendors | Leave a comment

We are thrilled to have Bernal Cutlery at the Mission Community Market on the last Thursday of every month!  If you bring your knives by early in the market, Bernal Cutlery will have them ready for you the same day. bernal at MCM

Owner Josh Donald first became interested in knives by way of woodcarving, and his shop opened for business in 2005.  Bernal Cutlery specializes in Japanese Whetstone grinding techniques, which produce a sharper, longer-lasting knife, with less wear and tear during the sharpening process.  Other “fast but aggressive dry grinders and belt sanders… remove unnecessary amounts of metal and are prone to producing enough heat to ruin a blade, often producing ugly scratches and marks in the process.” To learn more about whetstone grinding versus other techniques, check out their website.  In addition to sharpening, Bernal Cutlery offers Japanese, French, and vintage knives for sale, as well as classes on knife skills. They recently moved from Bernal Heights to a new shop at 18th and Guerrero in the Mission, but they’re still keeping it real with their original name to pay homage to the neighborhood they first called home. When asked for some knife tips for our blog readers, Josh mentioned two common mistakes that people tend to make with their knives:

1) Putting their knives in the dishwasher – knives should always be washed by hand
2) Using bamboo cutting boards –they are harsh on knives and bruise their edges

Don’t forget to bring your slicin’ and dicin’ tools down to MCM this week for the best sharpening around and more knife tips from the pros!

Purple Potato, Zucchini and Thyme Frittata

Frittatas are one of the easiest and most diverse dishes to make. Not only can you eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you can throw just about any vegetables, cheeses, meats or even leftovers you have on hand to make an excellent flavor combination.

With this recipe I combined Purple and Yukon Gold potatoes from Blue House Farm, zucchini from Yerena Farms, fresh thyme from Happy Boy Farms, eggs from Great Valley Poultry, and olive oil from Terra Savia to create a savory and hearty weekend breakfast.  Purple Potatoes look like precious gems, and when sliced add vibrant color to this dish.  I was able to save the extra frittata in the fridge to make delicious cold egg sandwiches the next day.

To make this recipe you will need:

1 tsp. Olive oil
8 large eggs
Dash of heavy cream
1 small zucchini
2 small potatoes

Meet our new intern Dana!

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Blog, Internship | 2 Comments

Hey everyone!

My name is Dana and I will be an MCM Intern this summer. Having spent some time as a Mercado volunteer and shopper, I am super stoked to be joining the team and contributing behind the scenes and on Thursdays. I’ve had a serious passion for healthy, fair, good food for as long as I remember. As with most foodies, this passion started as a love of cooking and eating and has morphed into a desire to make change within America’s food system by deepening consumers’ relationships with the food they eat. I can’t wait to be a regular part of the connections between producers and the public at the Mission Mercado. I’ll also be contributing to this blog regularly with vendor features, recipes, and more.

I spend my time between my job slinging deliciousness as a cheesemonger at Mission Cheese, delighting my roommates with home-baked cookies, and cooking up the treasures I discover at MCM.

Keep an eye out for my future posts and I’ll see you Thursdays at Bartlett & 22nd!

Don’t forget about Pops!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. Show your Dad that you’re nuts about him with a variety gift box from MCM vendor Winter’s Fruit and Nuts. For the next two weeks, Winter’s will have 2-lb boxes of assorted almonds and pistachios for a special MCM price of just $15 (regularly $20)! Quantities are limited so drop us an email if you’d like to reserve a box.

Dad not nuts about nuts? No problem! Jarred SF Brine will have delicious pickled goods this week, with two varieties making their first appearance this season: Pickled Green Strawberries (from Yerena Farms) and Sweet Spiced Pickled Cherries. Pick up a jar of the cherries to make Dad the perfect Manhattan or Old Fashioned!

Meet Tina and Zoe (16 months), MCM regulars who love the music, food demos, and seeing their neighbors!

Where do you live?  Liberty & Guerrero

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week, pretty much.

What are you buying?  Peaches from Twin Girls, a special order from Bok Ssam (in a bowl) so that Zoe can eat it.  I love all the samples that the vendors give out, so that Zoe can try new things. Often, we get salmon from Coastside Farms or cakes from flourChylde. And, we LOVE getting the kettle corn from Peter’s Kettle Corn!

What’s your favorite part of the market? We like the music, and also the cooking demos at the Urban Sprouts booth.  I really like the guy who does them*; he’s always so engaging.  It’s also nice to see people from the neighborhood.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about? There are more food vendors than before; the market has really grown. Also, it’s a great place to have dinner, that’s why you see so many parents here.

* Editor’s note: That’s Raul Hernandez with Urban Sprouts! Yay Raul!
