Meet our new intern Dana!

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Blog, Internship | 2 Comments

Hey everyone!

My name is Dana and I will be an MCM Intern this summer. Having spent some time as a Mercado volunteer and shopper, I am super stoked to be joining the team and contributing behind the scenes and on Thursdays. I’ve had a serious passion for healthy, fair, good food for as long as I remember. As with most foodies, this passion started as a love of cooking and eating and has morphed into a desire to make change within America’s food system by deepening consumers’ relationships with the food they eat. I can’t wait to be a regular part of the connections between producers and the public at the Mission Mercado. I’ll also be contributing to this blog regularly with vendor features, recipes, and more.

I spend my time between my job slinging deliciousness as a cheesemonger at Mission Cheese, delighting my roommates with home-baked cookies, and cooking up the treasures I discover at MCM.

Keep an eye out for my future posts and I’ll see you Thursdays at Bartlett & 22nd!

Most people compost things like beet greens and chard stems, but lots of unloved vegetable parts can actually be quite culinarily useful, not to mention tasty! These gorgeous beets are from Blue House Farm, and this simple recipe for roasted beets with wilted greens will show you how to utilize just about all of your beets.

Don’t forget about Pops!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. Show your Dad that you’re nuts about him with a variety gift box from MCM vendor Winter’s Fruit and Nuts. For the next two weeks, Winter’s will have 2-lb boxes of assorted almonds and pistachios for a special MCM price of just $15 (regularly $20)! Quantities are limited so drop us an email if you’d like to reserve a box.

Dad not nuts about nuts? No problem! Jarred SF Brine will have delicious pickled goods this week, with two varieties making their first appearance this season: Pickled Green Strawberries (from Yerena Farms) and Sweet Spiced Pickled Cherries. Pick up a jar of the cherries to make Dad the perfect Manhattan or Old Fashioned!

Give Input on the Future of Bartlett Street

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Blog, Mercado Plaza | Leave a comment

Invest in your community! Give input on the future of Bartlett Street at an open house Wednesday May 29th!

Join the City of San Francisco for an open house to discuss the future of Bartlett Street. Thanks to YOUR support, we secured funds for the Mercado Plaza project. Now tell us what you think the future should look like at an open house hosted by the San Francisco Planning Department, Dept of Public Works, MTA, the Rebar Group, and MCM. Improvements could include new pavement, safer sidewalks, market stalls, better lighting, street graphics, a marquee, and more. But it all depends on your input! Please come and tell us what you think! Light refreshments will be provided.

Meet Tina and Zoe (16 months), MCM regulars who love the music, food demos, and seeing their neighbors!

photo (36)

Where do you live?  Liberty & Guerrero

How often do you come to the MCM?  Every week, pretty much.

What are you buying?  Peaches from Twin Girls, a special order from Bok Ssam (in a bowl) so that Zoe can eat it.  I love all the samples that the vendors give out, so that Zoe can try new things. Often, we get salmon from Coastside Farms or cakes from flourChylde. And, we LOVE getting the kettle corn from Peter’s Kettle Corn!

What’s your favorite part of the market? We like the music, and also the cooking demos at the Urban Sprouts booth.  I really like the guy who does them*; he’s always so engaging.  It’s also nice to see people from the neighborhood.

What’s the best kept secret at MCM, or something you would like people to know about? There are more food vendors than before; the market has really grown. Also, it’s a great place to have dinner, that’s why you see so many parents here.

* Editor’s note: That’s Raul Hernandez with Urban Sprouts! Yay Raul!
