Get to know Persimmons

Posted on by Mission Community Market in Arata Farm, Blog, Twin Girls Farm | Leave a comment

Fall is on its way, and that means loads of delicious seasonal fruit will soon be available. First up are persimmons, available from Arata Farm and Twin Girls Farm. The fruit is edible and delicious in its firm state, but many believe that the best flavor is achieved when the fruit is able to rest a bit after harvest to develop a softer texture.

Commercially, there are two main types of persimmons: astringent and non-astringent.  Astringent persimmons contain very high levels of tannins and therefore should not be eaten before fully ripened. The Hachiya variety of persimmons sold by Twin Girls are the most common type of astringent persimmon. Non-astringent persimmons are not entirely free of tannins, but they have much lower levels than the astringent varieties and can be enjoyed when firm or when more mature.

The non-astringent persimmons available at Arata’s stand (pictured) are nice and firm, and I’ve been enjoying them all week long, eaten whole or cut into wedges. Twin Girls’ Hachiyas are much softer and are also delectable. Both varieties are delicious and ready for tasting at MCM! Check out these great suggestions of five interesting ways to eat this unique fruit, including everything from salsas to margaritas.

Tasty Summer Cheese Pairings

As a self-described cheese fiend, I’m always looking for fun new ways to incorporate cheese into just about every minute of my day. While many of us may think of cheese mainly as a savory snack, pairing a subtly salty cheese with a basket of vine-ripened berries is actually one of my favorite things about summer. Both of MCM’s cheese vendors–Achadinha Cheese Company and Spring Hill Cheese–offer cheeses that pair deliciously with what’s in season right now, like blueberries from Rainbow Orchards or raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries from Yerena Farms.

Achadinha carries several goat’s milk cheeses, but my favorite is Capricious, an aged cheese hand-rolled in the European style. The following recipe from Achadinha’s website offers a simple way to combine it with the freshest summer fruits. Read more

Fun Day with Carrots

As spring teased us with open skies and misty tufts of fog yesterday, a clear vision of Spring (and..wait for it… Summer) shone through on Bartlett Street. Baby carrots – awesome, tasty, orange – flew off the Happy Boy Farms table, just as delectably tangy raspberries made their first showing from Yerena Farms. And did someone say peaches?! Boom! The first crop from Twin Girls Farm is here! Don’t forget the Basil Menagerie by Lee Farms – brand new to MCM with cucumbers, mint, and FOUR types of basil from the Central Valley. Who knows what’s in store for next week…

Check out the cute baby carrots! Thanks Happy Boy

And nothing like a little visit from the kinder. Nice to see Karen Solomon out with Urban Sprouts‘ Audrey Roderick, showing some good green time to youth from Buena Vista school, just down the block. Thanks you guys!
